Title:Main Title: Objective Error Quantification for Polarimetric Based Precipitation Estimates using X-Band Radar
Description:Abstract: In an attempt to quantify the uncertainties accompanied by radar based precipitation estimation, an empirical approach is developed for the twin X-band radar system of Bonn and Jülich. The use of two identical radars with a large overlapping area makes it possible to directly compare separate radar measurements in almost the same point in space and time. The remaining difference after all correction and filtering procedures is attributed to the random measurement error which will be determined by calculating a weighted standard deviation. The weighting ensures the choice of the most probable reflectivity value for each point in the radar field and can be extended by a set of quality factors. As a result this approach produces an error field in the overlapping area of both radars which allows a detailed overview of the spatial and temporal distribution of uncertainties in radar based rainrate products. This will be useful for every application depending on the quantity of the rainrate, especially if some sort of accumulation is performed.
