Titles:Main Title: Monitoring of an infiltration experiment using electrical impedance tomography
Alternative Title: 4th report
Description:Abstract: An infiltration experiment was performed on a constructed test facility. The infiltration was monitored, using time domain reflectometry (TDR), ground penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic induction (EMI), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrical impedance tomography (EIT) in order to capture the water dynamics in space and time with different geophysical measurement techniques. EIT was performed on two profiles, one with stainless steel electrodes in the middle of the irrigated plot and another with non-polarizable Cu/CuSO4 electrodes which was one meter away from the steel electrode profile. Results show considerable heterogeneities in the dynamics of electrical conductivity, which is seen as a proxy for soil water content. A comparison of the used electrodes for the EIT measurements showed that non-polarizing electrodes not only improve the quality of the phase measurements but also showed a more stable electrical contact than the steel electrodes, which have had problems with the multiple infiltration/drainage cycles due to swelling and shrinking of the soil. Both EIT profiles were strongly affected by the installed TDR sensors due to electrode polarization at the metal-water interface and the electromagnetic pulses during the TDR measurements.
