Description: | Abstract: Electromagnetic induction (EMI) systems are often used to characterize the shallow subsurface, however only few studies use quantitative inversions to determine soil and subsoil structures. Here, we show that EMI inversions reveal the depth of paleo-river channel structures. The field F01 close to Selhausen (Germany) showed arms of buried paleo-river channels at about 0.5 m depth, which were found by the three-layer EMI data inversion scheme and validated by electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) measurements. Soil strata with more than three layers were smeared out by the implemented EMI inversion scheme however the overall structures were reconstructed indicating that the quantitative EMI inversions improve subsurface characterizations. |
