Title:Main Title: Soil moisture mapping in the Selhausen field with slim-line logging tool
Description:Abstract: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is routinely applied in petroleum industry to characterize oil wells by estimating the rock permeability [1, 2]. It is a powerful method to measure the dynamics of fluids in porous media like soil with a so-called inside-out NMR logging sensor. The evaluation and management of ground water is quite important for assessment of climate conditions and crop production. Monitoring the evolution of the moisture content in ground soils is the key for assessing the subsurface soil properties in hydrology and agriculture. The NMR logging tool was specifically designed for near-surface applications in shallow boreholes. NMR logging for which a tool was developed for field measurement shows particular advantages over other methods. First, the NMR measurement of moisture content is not affected by ions in solution due to the NMR signal mainly coming from atomic nuclei (the protons of water). Secondly, the NMR measurement tool can easily fit into a small-diameter hole apart from drilling a hole and measured in field in a non-destructive way the fluid and matrix properties in a well-defined sensitive volume distance from the magnet.
