Title:Main Title: Calibration and evaluation of a crop model using remote sensing data
Description:Abstract: Heterogeneity in crop growth is a widespread phenomenon often caused by contrasting soil properties which are difficult to measure and model spatially consistent not least due to limited data availability. Measurements of apparent electromagnetic conductivity (ECa) derived by electromagnetic induction (EMI) measurements have been proposed to obtain spatially consistent information about soil heterogeneity but have rarely been correlated with plant measurements. Little work has also been done to evaluate crop models with respect to their ability to reproduce field heterogeneity of crop growth. The aim of this study is to compare the EMI method with biomass measurements, especially the green leaf area index (GLAI), and to evaluate a crop model for its ability to reproduce the spatial variability of GLAI of two crops in two different years. Emphasis is on GLAI since this a crucial parameter affecting crop growth and yield.
