Title:Main Title: Vegetation effects on airborne passive microwave response to soil moisture: A case study for the Rur catchment, Germany
Description:Abstract: In May 2011 the Polarimetric L-band Multibeam Radiometer (PLMR2) of the Forschungszentrum Jülich was flown in the Ruhr catchment, Germany, a site of the Terrestrial Environmental Observatories (TERENO). We focus in this paper on the enhanced estimation of surface soil moisture (SSM) from PLMR2. The L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere (L-MEB) model was used to retrieve SSM from the PLMR2 brightness temperature measurements. Leaf Area Index (LAI) was estimated from RapidEye imagery of the same day with 5m resolution for the estimation of vegetation opacity. Different approaches were analyzed for transferring the LAI into vegetation opacity. The retrieved SSM was compared with in situ observation at different test sites within the TERENO observatory. Standard deviation range from 0.01m3m−3 to 0.193 m3m−3.
